Start saving your avocado from ripening with one of the quick easy recipes: the addictive pickled avocado recipe. Try it today!

I love avocado. I am sure many of you love avocado as well. Sliced over sunny-side-up eggs, a guacamole dip with your favorite tacos, over a crab salad… the choices are many and avocado just fits perfectly. But who does not struggle with the fact that avocado ripens too fast? Luckily, now you can save your avocado from ripening with one of the quick easy recipes: this addictive pickled avocado recipe.

Pickled avocado over a fried egg

This recipe is a great trick to having preserved avocado sitting in your fridge for a month. With simple steps, detailed instructions, a few ingredients, and most importantly, a couple of minutes, these addictive pickled avocados will be ready to go straight to your tummy.

Once you try this recipe, you will repeat it over and over again, especially if you love pickles. I said this statement in my pickled onions post, and I am repeating it here because I am confident about it. Imagine having a delicious condiment with 15 minutes of preparation time and 3 hours of pickling time. Yes, it is that quick and that easy.

Pickled unripe avocado

If you want the best results from this pickled avocado recipe, then you need to use unripe – not so hard – avocado. Remember, when we say pickles, we mean softer texture with additional flavor. Therefore, overripe avocados risk becoming creamy as they start pickling.

Avocado slices in jars

How long does pickled avocado last

If you have gone through my website and read some blogs, then you must have read somewhere that my recipes include only natural preservatives. Hence, though we are preserving these avocados, we are not going to preserve them forever. In real scenarios, this addictive pickled avocado lasts for a month in a mason jar or air-tight container in the fridge. That is only going to happen if you will resist adding them to your meal. In our household, they don’t last more than 10 days, they’re simply eaten.

What makes this addictive pickled avocado recipe special?

    • It is tweakable in terms of flavors: In this recipe, I am suggesting adding garlic cloves and cayenne pepper to boost the taste. However, many other flavors can be added such as onion, celery, peppers, and lemon …
    • You will be able to eat avocado all year long: why wait for the avocado season to eat avocados when you can have preserved avocados at home. After all, avocado makes a great ingredient in many salads and dishes.
    • It can be ready in no time: If you can have your hands free for 15 minutes, then you can easily prepare this recipe. That includes pealing and slicing avocados and boiling the brine. Not only that, prepare it in the morning and enjoy it over lunch.

Jars with cayenne powder and garlic

What are the ingredients of this recipe?

For this recipe, you will need 2 unripe avocados, water, distilled white vinegar, sugar, salt, garlic cloves, and chili pepper.

With these ingredients, you will be able to create a tangy brine that will result in flavorful addictive pickled avocado.

How to make this pickled avocado recipe?

First, prepare your container: By container here, I mean either a mason jar or an air-tight container. These two types of containers are the best for pickling.

Second, prepare the brine: You need to combine the water, vinegar, salt, and sugar in a saucepan and boil them over medium heat. Then let the brine cool before using it.

Third, slice the avocados: As the brine cools, start peeling off the avocados and slicing them. I prefer the medium slice size; however, the size is up to you. On another note, I suggest avoiding slicing them thinly as they will become very loose and overripe once pickled.

Finally combine the ingredients: Add the avocado slices, cayenne pepper, and garlic in the jar, and cover them with the brine. Close the lid and transfer the jar to the fridge for 3 hours.

How to use pickled avocado?

When it comes to this addictive pickled avocado, the list is long:

  • Try adding them over a sunny-side-up egg laid on a slice of toast bread. Sprinkle some chili pepper and enjoy.
  • Think of adding these pickled avocado slices to your favorite salad. Imagine the outcome of the combination between the tangy brine flavor and the salad dressing. When it comes to prepping the avocados, the way you cut them is totally up to you.
  • Pickled avocado goes well with any sandwich you like: Tuna, cheese, ham, mortadella… The sky is your limit!
  • A grilled piece of fish pairs well with the pickled avocado, especially next to a salad bowl or brown rice.
  • And finally, who said that you must eat them with a meal. Just get a small bowl and a fork, and have them as a snack!

Addictive pickled avocado

Pickled avocado over a fried egg

Start saving your avocado from ripening with one of the quick easy recipes: the addictive pickled avocado recipe. Try it today!

15 minutes
3 hours
Very easy

Ingredients

  • 2 unripe avocados (not so hard), peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 3 to 4 garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp olive oil or lemon – optional

Instructions

  1. Combine the water, vinegar, sugar, and salt in a saucepan.
  2. Over medium heat, bring them to a boil, stirring occasionally.
  3. Set aside to cool
  4. Peel and slice the avocados. Not too thin, not too thick
  5. In an air-tight container or a mason jar, place the garlic cloves, cayenne pepper, and avocado slices
  6. Pour cooled brine.
  7. Close the lid and shake slightly.
  8. Transfer the jar to the fridge and refrigerate for 3 hours.

Notes

  • Get unripe but not very hard avocados. To make sure they are unripe, try to remove the small stem at the top of the avocado. If it remains stuck it means it is unripe. If it is peeled, check the color underneath. Green color means a ripe avocado while brown color means overripe avocado with potential brown spots inside.
  • If you are adding olive oil or lemon juice, add them after pouring the brine.
  • You can also add parsley or cilantro leaves. This is totally up to you.
  • If the avocado slices become too mushy, this means that they are not good to consume anymore.
