Prepare an easy homemade pizza sauce with fresh tomatoes. An ideal Healthy Food Recipe to have a delicious homemade pizza.

Pizza lovers around the world are many. After all, pizza has always been one of the preferred meals for adults and kids, and an easy–to–prepare a meal that everybody can enjoy. Though we agree that pizza is an Italian dish, many chefs around the world have developed new pizza recipes, by using a different dough recipe or adding new ingredients to the toppings. However, what gives pizza that authentic flavor is ultimately the pizza sauce. So, what is the secret of preparing an easy homemade pizza sauce recipe with fresh tomatoes? Check out this healthy food recipe on this blog!

My quick easy recipe of homemade pizza sauce is an ideal choice to have a delicious homemade pizza. It is not only easy to make, but it will save your time and leave you with a good amount to use now and later.

With this recipe, you will end up doing 3 to 4 large pizzas depending on how thick you would like your sauce spread to be.

What makes this recipe unique?

This easy homemade pizza sauce calls for using fresh tomatoes. It will allow you to enjoy the real flavor of tomato in the sauce (a classic pizza sauce is based on real tomato flavor). Not to forget that you are not including in your sauce any kind of processed preservatives. Therefore,  I guarantee that once you prepare this easy homemade pizza sauce with fresh tomatoes, you will never buy a pizza sauce anymore.

What makes this easy homemade pizza sauce recipe flavorful?

2 facts jointly produce a flavorful pizza sauce: Ingredients, and simmering.

Ingredients:
  • Garlic: I always tend to add fresh garlic to the sauce because it gives the sauce a different flavor level.
  • Olive oil: It is not only necessary to fry the garlic and enhance its flavor, but olive oil is an essential ingredient to preserve the flavor of this sauce
  • Onion powder: The onion taste in the sauce is terrific. If you do not mind having chinks of diced onions in the sauce, you can swap the powder with finely chopped onion
  • Sugar: In addition to the fact that sugar plays the role of a natural preservative, sugar plays a role in strengthening the tomato flavor in the sauce
  • Basil: An essential ingredient in Italian dishes, basil gives the sauce an incredible taste. If you are using fresh basil, I guarantee you will have a more delicious sauce.
  • Oregano: Another ingredient that is used to enhance the flavor of your sauce is oregano. Oregano and Basil work hand in hand to add a special Italian flavor to your sauce
  • Tomato paste: It intensifies the tomato flavor as it is only made with tomatoes. In addition, it thickens the sauce and gives it a good consistency.
  • Salt & Pepper: To taste, but not to be missed

Simmering:

To cook well the aromatics and blend the flavors, simmering is key. The longer you simmer your sauce, the more enhanced the flavor will be.

Is making pizza sauce at home time-consuming?

Not at all. As I mentioned earlier, you will have your pizza sauce ready in no time. You can prepare your sauce while working on your pizza dough. If you will have your tomatoes ready ahead of time, your pizza sauce will not take a maximum of 30 minutes including simmering time.

To prepare the sauce, first, you need to fry the minced garlic for 2 minutes in olive oil. Then add the tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, and seasonings, and bring to a boil. Finally, once boiled, lower the heat and let it simmer for 20 minutes. If you prefer a thick consistency of the sauce, you can simmer it for 30 minutes instead.

Which tomato should I choose to prepare this easy homemade pizza sauce recipe?

Just like homemade ketchup, the top pick for pizza sauce is plum tomatoes. Red plum tomatoes are the ideal choice to prepare a condensed tomato-flavored pizza sauce. However, if you do not get your hands-on plum tomatoes, it is not the end of the world. Most importantly, aim for red tomatoes as they will be well ripened, and tend to be juicier and more flavorful.

How can I have the fresh tomatoes ready for pizza sauce?

This is a simple exercise:

  • Scratch the skin of the tomatoes
  • Add the tomatoes to a saucepan filled with boiled water
  • Allow boiling for 5 minutes
  • Transfer the tomatoes to a strainer, and let them cool
  • Peel the skin away
  • Blend the tomatoes

Can I freeze homemade pizza sauce?

Of course. After all, you do not want to get your money wasted. And frankly, this sauce is so delicious to be thrown away. Freezing pizza sauce makes it last for months and can be done in either large batches or smaller batches based on the serving size of your pizzas.
