If you like this tangy taste that pickles offer, then check how to pickle chili peppers. A quick and easy recipe to enjoy with every meal.

If you asked me last year if I am in for pickling chili peppers, I would have said NO WAY by all means. The reason is that I am not a fan of anything chili and I did not use to like the effect that chili creates. Little did I know that a year later, not only I would pickle chili peppers very often, but I would also enjoy their taste and add them to my dishes. I won’t lie, I am currently adding only a fair mild quantity, but to reach the fact of loving these pickled chili peppers, is by itself a milestone!

A pickled chili pepper jar

I started the journey of understanding how to pickle chili peppers when my husband started buying jars of pickled chili peppers very often. He is an avid lover of hot and chili peppers, sauces, and marinades… and pickled chili peppers are not an exception. On the counterpart, as an advocate of DIY, I could not resist digging to put in place the perfect recipe on how to pickle chili peppers.

Pickling is not hard. It is considered one of the quick easy recipes to make at home. If you like this tangy vinegary taste that pickles offer, then you must try this recipe. On my website, I created many pickling recipes such as pickled onions and pickled avocado, and I am working on the best recipe to pickle turnip now. I love pickles and I truly feel it boosts the flavor of any meal be it a sandwich, salad, a dip, or any other sort of dish.

Does pickling help preserve food?

My blunt answer is YES. The pickling process has always been used to extend the shelf life of many food types. People used this process to preserve meat at some point. Nowadays, pickling is mainly associated with vegetables such as cucumber, carrots, cauliflower, cabbage, hot peppers, and recently onions & avocados.

If we put aside the store-bought pickles which include most of the time artificial preservatives, Homemade pickles are made with the use of natural preservatives such as vinegar, salt, sugar, and oil.

I have listed the role of these ingredients as natural preservatives in my blog about pickled onions. I highly recommend reading through it.

What is chili peppers brine?

The brine in this recipe consists of water, vinegar, sugar, and salt. As mentioned above, the majority of these ingredients play the role of natural preservatives to keep the pickles in the fridge in perfect condition for up to 2 months.

To flavor the pickles and the brine, I add sometimes garlic, chili flakes, or dried oregano.

What are the types of pickled pepper?

As pickled peppers are commonly found in stores, you have jalapenos, banana peppers, bell pepper, sweet & hot cherry peppers, and cubanelle.

How to store chili peppers?

When you opt to make pickled chili peppers, make sure to use air-tight containers. Storing these pickled chili peppers is best done in a cold environment. A fridge is a great option. I strongly advise avoiding keeping the jar in a room temperature environment as pickled chili peppers will lose the crunchiness effect over time.

How to Use Pickled Chili Peppers

Simply on anything. You can have these pickled chili peppers the way you want. There is no rule; there are no limitations.  Here are some ideas:

    • Try adding these pickled chili peppers over your sandwiches or within your wraps, or submarines.
    • Chili peppers pair well with Mexican food. Ty these pickled chili peppers with quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas, fajitas…
    • Add them to your salad and enjoy the delicious flavor of the tangy pickles and the salad dressing when combined.
    • These pickled peppers make a great add-on to your burger. Be it meat, chicken, fish, or vegetarian, just try adding them and thank me later.
    • And finally, if you are a chili lover, you do not need to find any dish to add them. Simply grab a fork and have a few slices.

How to pickle chili peppers

A pickled chili pepper jar

If you like this tangy taste that pickles offer, then check how to pickle chili peppers. A quick and easy recipe to enjoy with every meal.

5 minutes
3 days
Very easy

Ingredients

  • 8 Red chili peppers
  • Half cup water – Lukewarm
  • Half cup vinegar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar

Instructions

  1. First, wear gloves to avoid burning your fingers
  2. Slice the red peppers thinly on one side to extract the membranes and the seeds. Disregard this step if you do not want to reduce the spicy level
  3. Chop the red pepper.
  4. In an air-tight container or a mason jar, stuff the garlic, and chopped red pepper.
  5. In a cup, mix the salt, sugar, and water. Stir well until the salt and sugar are dissolved
  6. Pour the vinegar and water equally over the red pepper in the jar
  7. Try to pock down the pepper to get rid of any air pockets.
  8. Close the lid and store the jar in the fridge.

Notes

  • Consider removing the seeds and membranes if you do not want your peppers extra hot.
  • Do not cut thin nor thick slices. Aim to cut them in between. Thick chili peppers overcome the flavor of other ingredients in your dish. Thin chili peppers tend to soften when pickled.
  • If the red peppers are thinly sliced, you can have them immediately once the brine is added.
  • If the cut is mild to thick, you need to wait a couple of days before they become well pickled.
